NOV. Type genus Gyroconops Camras, 1955b: 174 . Included genus: Gyroconops . Uncontroverted morphological autapomorphy: vertex large, square, and setose, with ocelli displaced forward (7). Previously placed as a subgenus of Physoconops , members of Gyroconops have been variously placed within Conopini and Physocephalini . As presently defined, members of Gyroconopini can be distinguished from Physoconops by the characteristic shape of the vertex and frons, the developed scutellum, the non-petiolate male abdomen, the presence of maxillary palpi, the absence of a notch in the posterior margin of the eye, and the absence of a characteristic dark anterior/hyaline posterior wing pattern. Species examined – Gyroconops abbreviatus comb. nov. ( Physoconops ); Gyroconops parvus comb. nov. ( Physoconops ); Gyroconops sylvosus comb. nov. ( Physoconops ).
