Moreno & Cubero ex Del Guacchio & P.Caputo , comb. nov. et stat. nov. Cicer reticulatum Ladiz , in Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh 34: 201. 1975 (basion.). The wild ancestor of cultivated Spinach ( Spinacia oleracea L.) has been tentatively identified in the past in S. tetrandra Steven ex M.Bieb. or S. turkestanica on morphological grounds ( Andersen & Torp, 2011 ). However, molecular investigations established beyond any doubt that the central Asiatic S. turkestanica is the only wild relative of S. oleracea (e.g., Ku et al. , 2017; Gyawali et al. , 2021 ), toward which maternal introgression has been demonstrated ( She et al. , 2022 ).
