Spaeth (1912a) described this taxon originally as a subspecies of Basiprionota decempustulata ( Boheman, 1850 ) based on extensive material, but did not select the type; thus, all are syntypes . Spaeth also included specimens generally labeled as from “Borneo” or “ Sarawak ” in the type series, even though these were not mentioned in the original description. However, Spaeth labeled them as cotypes with his original identification labels, and such specimens are found in almost every large European museum, as well as in his own collection deposited at the MM. Spaeth must have had numerous specimens, which he either exchanged for other specimens or donated to the respective institutions, as they bear locality labels in his handwriting and/or additional labels indicating that Spaeth originally received them from others. Further, Spaeth probably did not mention these specimens in the original description because of the vague locality data and large number of specimens, but they are part of the type series according to Article 72.4.1.1 ( ICZN 1999 ). The ZMH specimen is part of the type series, as it possesses the label with “ m. cot . [= mihi cotypus]”, indicating that Spaeth saw it when he described this subspecies ( Fig. 10 ). The pink (and later red) type labels were added by Spaeth only to specimens in his collection .
