The following combination of character states is diagnostic for this genus: Epistome with five emarginations anteriorly ( Fig. 1 ); transverse groove marking epistomal suture present (reduced in some species) ( Fig. 1 ); antennal scape without a stout, erect sensillum anterodorsally; pronotum with antebasal denticle ( Fig. 2 ); humeral carinae of elytra present; procoxal cavities open posteriorly; all coxae widely separated; intercoxal process of prosternum broad, truncate or slightly curved posteriorly ( Fig. 3 ); intercoxal process of sternum III acuminate apically ( Fig. 4 ); tarsal formula 5-5- 4 in males, 5-5- 5 in females; tarsomere I shorter than penultimate tarsomere; anterior tibial spurs very unequal in size, longer spur strongly curved; parameres present, internal sac with flagellum and basal plates (as in Fig. 17 , 25 ). Discussion. Lefkovitch (1959) provided a detailed generic description of Laemophloeus and designated the European Cucujus monilis Fabricius, 1787 , as type species.
