The basionym of this species is Acanthocorys variabilis (Popofsky, 1913), but it was later emended to a narrower concept and placed in Lophophaena by Petrushevskaya (1971). Herein we follow Petrushevskaya’s (1971) concept of Lophophaena variabilis , although not all other authors have done this, some retaining Popofsky’s broader species concept. Range.
