Untying the Gordian Knot: on Tanais novaezealandiae Thomson (Crustacea, Tanaidacea, Tanaidae) from New Zealand, with descriptions of two new Zeuxoides species Author Bird, Graham J text Zootaxa 2008 1877 1 36 journal article 10.5281/zenodo.184126 445f93ae-b5a0-42b9-9245-a3a603e7d59b 1175-5326 184126 Zeuxoides Sieg, 1980 Species included ( New Zealand and Australian species in bold): Zeuxoides aka n.sp. ; Z. helleri (Sieg) ; Z. ohlini (Stebbing) ; Z. pseudolitoralis (Sieg) ; Z. spongicola (Barnard) ; Z. casanunda Bamber ; Z. lasti Edgar ; Z. lauriebourqueae Edgar ; Z. mawbeyi Edgar ; Z. rimuwhero n.sp. Remarks: This genus is effectively defined by the cap-like terminal article of the uropod, distinguishing it from Zeuxo , although there is overlap with Pancoloides Sieg with respect to this character. The species are usually distinguishable from Zeuxo by their more setose antennules and stouter uropod articles but, again, there is some overlap with Zeuxo ( Edgar 2008 ) . Several Zeuxoides species ( casanunda , helleri , lauriebourqueae , mawbeyi , pseudolitoralis ), appear to form an apparent clade based on the reduced lacinia of the right mandible. With only a single published record from Campbell Island (Sieg 1980) the presence of Z. helleri in New Zealand’s Subantarctic region needs confirmation.
