Description
.
Male Imago.
Length: Body
3.2 mm
; forewing
3.5 mm
; hind wing
0.6 mm
; tibia III
0.5 mm
(n=1).
Head
brown. Turbinate portion of compound eyes light brown. Antenna scape and pedicel dark brown. Dorsal portion of turbinate (
Fig. 29G
) eyes slightly oval; length 1.3× width; stalk height 2.0× height of dorsal portion.
Thorax
with anteronotal and metascutellar protuberance rounded. Legs light brown. Leg III with tibia 1.8× length of femur; tarsus 0.6× length of femur. Forewing (
Fig. 29H
) with C and Sc areas apically opaque; veins yellowish; stigmatic area with seven cross veins not reaching subcostal vein; marginal intercalary veins paired, absent between CuA and A; length of each intercalary vein 0.2× distance between adjacent longitudinal veins; length of forewing about 2.4× width. Hind wing (
Fig.
29I
) hyaline; with two complete longitudinal veins; costal process quadrangular, posteriorly projected; located on basal third.
Abdominal
terga (
Fig. 29G
) light brown; tracheation black. Sterna I–VI light brown, VII–X brown. Caudal filaments lost. Genitalia (
Fig. 29J
) with light brown forceps; forceps segment I cylindrical; 0.3× length of segment II; distance between base of forceps 0.4× distance between lateral margins of forceps. Forceps segment III 0.3× length of segment II. Posterior margin of styliger plate straight, with small and rounded spine medially, projected ventrally (red arrow); posterior margin without rounded protuberance.
Complementary description. Mature nymph.
Length of body:
2.6–3.1 mm
; cercus:
1.5 mm
(n=1).
Head.
Frons (
Figs 29D and 29E
) with two keels (black arrow). Antenna with scape and pedicel subcylindrical; flagellum (
Fig. 29A
) with spines and thin setae on apex of each segment. Labrum; dorsal surface near distolateral margin with two long and thin setae distinguishable from others; ventrally, distal and distolateral margins with bifid and pectinate setae, lateral margin with stout setae, ventral surface laterally with short and stout setae. Right mandible incisors partially fused. Labium with glossa subequal in length to paraglossa; inner margin ventrally bare; inner margin dorsally with nine stout setae increasing in length apically; apex, dorsally, with one or two stout setae; outer margin ventrally bare; outer margin dorsally with eight stout setae; ventral surface scattered with long and thin setae. Paraglossa with apex rounded and ventrally bare; dorsally with three long stout setae; outer margin ventrally bare; inner margin dorsally with row of ten long stout setae; dorsal surface with one longitudinal row of six to seven setae increasing in length apically; ventral surface with one row of five stout setae increasing in length near inner margin. Labial palp with segment I 0.8× length of segments II and III combined; segment I with thin setae. Segment II with distomedial protuberance 2.2× width of base of segment III; inner margin with few short and thin setae; outer margin with few, short and thin setae; dorsally covered with thin setae. Segment III inner margin with one row of stout setae ventrally and dorsally; length 1.0× width; covered with many thin setae, especially on outer margin.
Thorax

), apex of femora and tibiae brown; ratio 1.4:(
0.33mm
):1:0.5. Forefemur with length about 3.4× maximum width; dorsal margin with row of blunt setae (in lateral view they look like stout setae); length of setae on dorsal margin about 0.2× maximum width of femur; apex rounded, with short spines; anterior surface with one row of blunt setae near ventral margin in apical half, basal half with few stout setae near ventral margin; one row of blunt setae near dorsal margin. Dorsal margin of tibia bare; ventral margin with one row of stout setae; anterior surface with two to four blunt setae near dorsal margin. Dorsal margin of tarsus bare; ventral margin with one row of pectinate and stout setae. Mid and hind legs similar, except ventral margin of tibiae with two rows of stout setae, and anterior surface of tibia without blunt setae near dorsal margin.
Abdomen
with gills hyaline; margin with short and thin setae. Tracheae pigmented, restricted to main trunk. Gill I subequal in length to segment II; oblong, apically rounded. Gill IV as long as length of segments V to VI combined; oblong, broadly rounded at apex. Gill VII longer than length of segment VIII; oblong, apically rounded. Paraproct with 12–16 marginal spines; postero-lateral extension with marginal spines. Caudal filaments yellowish. Paracercus with short spines on each segment (
Fig. 30E
). Cercus with long spines on every four segments (
Fig. 30D
).
Comments.
The nymphs of
P. waimiri
and
P. charrua
are similar, but they can be distinguished by the presence of three spots on the abdominal terga of
P. charrua
and two spots on
P. waimiri
. They also can be distinguished by the presence of two to four blunt setae on the anterior surface of the tibia, near the dorsal margin in
P. waimiri
; these setae are not present on the tibia of
P. charrua
.
We did not collect
P. waimiri
outside of the Amazon region; we reanalyzed those specimens reported from the Northeast region of
Brazil
by
Boldrini
et al.
(2012)
and verified that they belong to
P. charrua
.
