Genetic data. the single specimen of P. ruginaria from Ethiopia and populations from South-East Asia (examined from Thailand ) diverge by 0.46% only, with very similar haplotypes occurring in most populations from western and eastern Africa. In West Africa, however, there is another cluster of haplotypes at a minimum distance of 4.1%, requiring further study.
