Prosphaerosyllis tetralix (Eliason, 1920)
Sphaerosyllis tetralix
Eliason, 1920
Notes
Questionable status. Reported from Greece by
Dando et al. (1995)
; the record by
Zenetos et al. (1997)
probably belongs to a different species. Records from throughout the Mediterranean exist but at least some of them belong to other species (
Faulwetter et al. 2011a
) and the species is probably restricted to the colder waters of the North Sea and North-East Atlantic (
Olivier et al. 2012
). During the last years, several new
Prosphaerosyllis
species have been described from Europe and the Mediterranean and Mediterranean species of the genus need to be revised. The Greek record is from near hydrothermal vents where temperatures are probably unfavourable for the species and must be considered questionable.
