Type species: Scatella buccata Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (= Ephydra stagnalis Fallén, 1813 ), subsequent designation by Coquillett, 1910 : 603 . Remarks. The male terminalia of Scatella are highly specialized with a uniform shape of the epandrium, having a simple, obclavate outline, reduction of the phallapodeme, and enlarged ejacapodeme. The gonites are narrow and bear an antero-dorsal claw-shaped projection and the aedeagus is weakly sclerotized. Thus the use of male terminalia for species recognition is limited.
