Distribution and frequent occurrence of diatom taxa (Bacillariophyta) inhabiting warmer oceans in Seogwipo coast of Jeju Island, southernmost Korea Author Joh, Gyeongje text Phytotaxa 2021 2021-08-30 517 1 1 67 http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.517.1.1 journal article 10.11646/phytotaxa.517.1.1 1179-3163 8061058 38. Cocconeis pellucida Grunow ( Figs 87, 88 ) Type locality: The Adriatic Sea, the Mediterranean. References: Hustedt 1931 –1959, p. 357, fig. 812; Witkowski et al. 2000 , p. 111, pl. 34, figs 1–3. Morphometrics: Valves 46–104 (30–100) μm long, 39–95 (20–70) μm wide, transapical striae 30 (ca 30) in 10 μm of sternum valve, or 24 (20) in 10 μm of raphe valve. Remarks: Cocconeis pellucida is common in warmer oceans, and is rarely reported in Europe ( Hustedt 1931 – 1959, Witkowski et al. 2000 ). This taxon has been reported abundantly as epiphytons in the eastern coast of Japan , Katsuura ( Takano 1962 ), the Penghu Island of Taiwan , Morlaix Bay, the western coast of France ( Riaux-Gobin 1991 ), Canary Islands of the eastern Atlantic Ocean, off West Africa ( Gil-Rodríguez et al. 2003 ), Parana coast of Brazil ( Procopiak et al. 2006 ), the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu ) in the southern Pacific Ocean ( Stidolph et al. 2012 ), and from Mexico ( López-Fuerte & Siqueiros-Beltrones 2016 ). It was reported previously as plankton in marine waters of Korea ( Shim 1994 ), and is currently rarely epiphytic on seaweeds along the Seogwipo coast in Jeju Island.
