Primarily mesopelagic; depth: 0– 1,310 m ( 4,298 ft ) (min.: Orlov and Tokranov 2019 ; max.: Mecklenburg et al. 2002). A record of 4,500 m ( 14,760 ft ) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) was based on the maximum depth fished by a midwater trawl and may represent a catch shallower than the maximum depth
