Etymology.
The specific name is a combined noun phrase in apposition taken from the Tupi Indian language and means “large keel” (
cupepema
= keel;
assu
= large) and refers to the very large subdistal ventral keel on the embolus of the male palp.
Diagnosis.
The males of
Caayguara cupepemassu
sp. nov.
resemble those of
C. cupepemayri
sp. nov.
by the general conformation of the male palp, with simple RTA without ventral lobes and embolus with many keels and projections (
Figs 39
,
44
). They can be distinguished from the latter by the very long and wide ventral keel and distal, ventrally bent keel, covering part of the distal region of the embolus (
Fig. 39
; vk, dk). The females resemble those of
C. juati
sp. nov.
,
C. apiaba
sp. nov.
and
C. ajuba
sp. nov.
by the general conformation of the epigynum (
Figs 26
,
31
,
36
,
41
). They are distinguished from the latter by the touching part of lateral lobes being shorter than half the large rounded median septum in the epigynum (
Fig. 41
) and by the vulva with pp showing an narrow proximal part, almost as long as the multilobed part, and by the very short fertilization ducts (
Fig. 42
).
FIGURES 39–43.
Caayguara cupepemassu
sp. nov.
39 male, left palp, ventral view (dk = distal keel; dp = dorsal projection; tp = tegular projection; vk = ventral keel); 40 ditto, retrolateral view; 41 female, epigynum, ventral view; 42 ditto, vulva, dorsal view; 43 schematic course of internal duct system. Scale lines: 0.5 mm.
Description. Male (IBSP 54056):
Dorsal shield of prosoma orange with brown fovea. Chelicerae, legs and pedipalps orange. Sternum cream colored with pale orange margins. Labium and endites pale orange, distally lighter. Opisthosoma dorsally brownish gray, mottled with brown spots and with pair of anterior white marks. Ventrally cream colored. Total length 8.1. Prosoma: 3.3 long, 3.3 wide. Opisthosoma: 4.7 long, 2.6 wide. Leg measurements: I: 22.9 (6.0, 2.1, 6.7, 6.0, 2.1); II: 25.4 (6.7, 2.1, 7.5, 6.7, 2.4); III: 16.8 (4.8, 1.7, 4.7, 4.2, 1.4); IV: 19.2 (5.5, 1.6, 5.2, 5.2, 1.7). Spination follows the generic pattern. Palp (
Fig. 76
): RTA simple with no ventral lobes (
Fig. 40
); dorsal projection small, slightly triangular (Figs 3940; dp). Tegulum with small triangular projection (
Fig. 39
; tp). Embolus with inconspicuous
pars pendula
.
Female (IBSP 54054):
Coloration pattern as in male. Total length 11.2. Prosoma: 3.9 long, 3.6 wide. Opisthosoma: 7.0 long, 2.6 wide. Eye diameters: 0.22, 0.22, 0.16, 0.24; interdistances: 0.20, 0.06, 0.34, 0.30, 0.20, 0.14. Leg measurements: I: 19.0 (5.1, 2.2, 5.3, 4.8, 1.6); II: 21.4 (5.9, 2.3, 6.1, 5.4, 1.7); III: 14.4 (4.4, 1.7, 3.8, 3.4, 1.1); IV: 16.4 (5.0, 1.7, 4.2, 4.0, 1.5). Spination follows the generic pattern. Epigynum with large rounded median septum (
Fig. 41
), epigynal field rounded, slightly wider than long (
Fig. 41
). Vulva: pp long and slender with 8–9 linearly arranged lobes on posterior half (
Fig. 42
).
Variation
. Males (n = 10): total length 7.3–8.7; prosoma 3.1–3.8; femur I 5.8–6.3. Females (n = 10): total length 8.4–12.8; prosoma 3.2–4.0; femur I 4.1–5.4.
Distribution
. Southeastern and southern Atlantic Forest, from central eastern Minas Gerais to northern Rio Grande do Sul (
Fig. 85
).
