This genus represents the Subfamily
Lutrinae
and has three recognized species:
Lutra
lutra
occupies most of Eurasia,
L. sumatrana
occurs in southeastern Asia, and the extinct
L. nippon
was endemic to
Japan
. A single species,

lives throughout the Korean Peninsula and littoral islands.
