Proc. Asiat. Soc. Bengal (1) 3: 85 Holotype : ZSI 4104, male, Duffla Hills, Assam-Bhutan Frontier, coll. Col. Godwin-Austen Paratype : NHMUK 1946.8 .13.95 (original number NHMUK 1906.8.10.5), male, Duffla Hills , Assam-Bhutan Frontier , coll. Col. Godwin-Austen Type locality : Duffla [= Dafla], Assam/ Bhutan border (fide Wermuth 1967) Remarks : According to Das et al. (1998) ZSI 15755 (from ‘Nainital, 6,600 ft. ’) is also listed as a type for J . andersoniana in the register, but this specimen was fixed by Annandale (1907) as the holotype of J . kumaonensis . As ZSI 15755 was collected by Annandale only in 1906 the specimen cannot possibly have been present in the collection when J . andersoniana was first described. Japalura batangensis Li, Deng, Wu & Wang, 2001 = Diploderma batangense ( Li, Deng, Wu & Wang, 2001 ) J. Sich. Teach. Coll. 22 (4): 329 Holotype : STC Ba-98012, adult male, Wangjiao ( 29°17.6′N , 99°5.2′E ), Batang Country , Sichuan , 2,400 m asl , coll. Wu Yi , 9 Aug. 1998 Allotype : STC Ba-98004, adult female; Quxigong Village ( 29°46.1′N , 99°3.8′E ) Batang Country , Sichuan , 4,100 m asl , coll. Wan Yu , 29 July 1998 . Paratypes : STC Ba98010; Ba98014; Ba98017, three males ; STC Ba98015; Ba98016; Ba98018, three females: collected from the same locality as holotype, 5–9 Aug. 1998 . Type locality : Wangjiao ( 29°17.6′N , 99°5.2′E ), Batang Country, Sichuan , 2,400 m asl, PR China Japalura bengalensis Annandale, 1912 = Japalura variegata Gray, 1853 Rec. Indian Mus. 8(2): 57, pl. V fig. 4 Holotype : ZSI 12564 female, Buxa , Jalpaiguri district , Bengal frontier of Bhutan Type locality : Buxa, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal , India Remarks : In an earlier publication Annandale (1906: 288) referred to this specimen as a male Japalura yunnanensis . We follow Smith (1935) and consider J. bengalensis conspecific with Japalura variegata . Japalura brevicauda Manthey, Denzer, Hou & Wang, 2012 = Diploderma brevicauda ( Manthey, Denzer, Hou & Wang, 2012 ) Zootaxa 3200: 29 Holotype : AMNH 19879 (formerly a paratype of J . flaviceps ), male, Snow Mt. Village , 2,740 m asl ( 27°05’N , 100°11’E ), 19 km north of Lijiang , coll. R. C. Andrews and E. Heller , Nov. 1916 Paratypes . AMNH 19878 (formerly a paratype of J . flaviceps ), female, temple on a mountain ( 2,590 m ) overlooking Lijiang , coll. R. C. Andrews and E. Heller , 11. Oct. 1916 ; NMW 20853, juvenile, Lijiang , coll. von Handel- Mazzetti , June 1915 ; ZMB 28932, female, eastern slopes of the Yulong Snow Mountains , near Lijiang (ca. 26°53’N , 100°11’E ,> 2,500 m asl .), coll. C. Schneider , between July and Oct. 1914 Type locality : Eastern slopes of Yulong Snow Mountains, vicinity of Lijiang, Lijiang Prefecture, Yunnan , PR China Japalura brevipes Gressit, 1936 = Diploderma brevipes ( Gressitt, 1936 ) Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington 49: 117 Holotype : CAS 71998, female, Bukai , near Horisha , Central Formosa (altitude 1,200 m ), coll. J. L. Gressitt , 16 June 1934 Paratypes : MVZ 19308, female ; MVZ 23357–58 , one female and one juvenile; same locality as the holotype Type locality : Bukai (Wu-chieh, Wujie), Yilan , Taiwan Remarks : Gressitt’s (1936) assignment of paratypes is slightly ambiguous. He mentioned three paratypes although he actually lists four: “Three paratypes : two adult females (one in Mus. Vert. Zoöl.) and a juvenile, with the same data; a juvenile specimen from Sakahen, eastern Formosa , alt. 1,100 meters, July 13, 1934 ”. While it appears that only one specimen should be extant in the MVZ collection, their database lists two further specimens with the same collection data as the holotype (MVZ 23357–58, 23357 listed as paratopotype) and one specimen from Sakahen that has been collected by Gressitt on 13 July 1934 (MVZ 23359). As neither the CAS online database nor the handwritten catalogue by Slevin lists further specimens collected by Gressitt we consider MVZ 23357–58 as paratypes . As Gressitt’s statement regarding the number of paratypes is ambiguous we do not list MVZ 23359 as paratype although it was part of the original series collected by Gressitt. J . brevipes has been treated by most authors as a junior synonym of J . swinhonis since Okada (1937) considered them conspecific. Ota (1989b) revalidated J . brevipes to full species rank. For this work he examined the holotype and a paratype ( MVZ 19308) . Nima , 21 June 2016 ; all with same locality data as holotype ; KIZ 016486 , adult female, Kanuo , Chamdo , Tibet , China ( 31.0433°N , 97.2239°E , elevation 3,245 m , WGS 84 ), coll. D. Zou & F. Yan , 13 May 2015 Type locality : Chaya County, Chamdo, Tibet , PR China Remarks : Although in an earlier paper Wang et al (2018) resurrected the genus Diploderma their new species ( Wang et al. 2019 ) is described as Japalura s. l. and the previous taxonomic paper is not mentioned at all. Based on their description and apparent close relationship to flaviceps we assign the species drukdaypo to the genus Diploderma . It should also be noted that within the publication the year of description is given as 2016 although the paper was only published in 2019. Japalura fasciata Mertens, 1926 = Diploderma fasciatum ( Mertens, 1926 ) Senckenbergiana 8 (3–4): 146 Holotype : SMF 9871 , male, H. Fruhstorfer Type locality : not known. Remarks : The type specimen was purchased by the Senckenberg Museum from H. Fruhstorfer, Tonkin (N Vietnam ) [Boettger (1904)]. This apparently led Smith (1935) to state “ Tongking ” as the type locality. Japalura flaviceps Barbour & Dunn, 1919 = Diploderma flaviceps ( Barbour & Dunn, 1919 ) Proc. New England zool. Club 7: 16 Holotype : MCZ R-12469, adult male, sandy shores of the Tung River in western Szechuan , coll. W. R. Zappey , 7. Feb 1908 . Paratypes : MCZ R12470–73 , all listed as skeletons, same data as the holotype ; Type locality : Tung River (= Dadu He), Western Szechuan (= Sichuan ), China Remarks : Barbour & Dunn (1919) listed three further paratypes from the Snow Mountains near Lichiangfu in northern Yunnan , not far from the Szechuan frontier AMNH collection. Of these AMNH 19879 was later designated as the holotype for Japalura brevicauda Manthey, Denzer, Hou & Wang, 2012 and AMNH 19878 as a paratype for that species. The whereabouts of the third specimen is unknown. Japalura hamptoni Smith, 1935 = Diploderma hamptoni ( Smith, 1935 ) Fauna Brit. June 1982 Type locality : Qingmuchuan, Ningqiang County., Shaanxi Province , China , 700 m asl Remarks : The catalogue numbers for the allotype and paratypes are only mentioned in the Chinese part of the description. Japalura microlepis Jerdon, 1870 = Japalura variegata Gray, 1853 Proc. Asiat. Soc. Bengal, 1870: 76 Holotype : NHMUK 1946.8 .14.10 (original number NHMUK 1870.11.29.44), female (Boulenger: 309, specimen g), Sikkim , pres. T. C. Jerdon Type locality : Sikkim Remarks : Jerdon (1870) only had a single specimen for the original description which therefore becomes the holotype . This specimen corresponds to specimen g in Boulenger (1885: 309) . See also comments under J. variegata . We follow Boulenger (1885) and consider Japalura microlepis conspecific with J. variegata . Japalura mitsukurii Stejneger, 1898 = Diploderma swinhonis ( Günther, 1864 ) J. Coll. Sci. Univ. Tokyo 12: 218 Holotype : USNM 36505 , male, Botel Tobago Island , coll. T. Tada , 1896/97 Paratype : USMN 36506 , female ; CAS 27257 (formerly cotype e = presumably Science College Tokyo SCT 24 e) , male, Botel Tobago Island ; SCT 24a, male; SCT 24b, female; SCT 24c, male; SCT 24d, male; all coll. T. Tada , 1896/97 Type locality : Botel Tobago Island (= Lanyu Island) Remarks : Alternatively TIU ( Tokyo Imperial University; now University of Tokyo , Science College Museum, SCT) is used as the collection acronym (see Frost 2019 ). Stejneger (1898) stated that the collection consisted of eight specimens. In his Herpetology of Japan (1907: 191) he only listed seven specimens, the ones listed above. He designated USNM 36505 as the type, which we understand is actually the holotype . Consequently, the remaining specimens are considered paratypes . Stejneger (1907) erroneously stated that the collection date was May 1899 , i. e. after the original publication. Van Denburgh (1912) synonymized J . mitsukurii with J . swinhonis and treated it as conspecific with or a subspecies of the latter. Most subsequent authors followed this classification until Ota (1988b) initially showed that J . mitsukurii represents a valid species and that J . swinhonis formosensis had to be considered conspecific with J . mitsukurii . In a later publication Ota (1991a) revised this classification and stated that J . mitsukurii , and consequently J . swinhonis formosensis , constitutes a junior synonym of J . swinhonis (= Diploderma swinhonis ). Japalura ngoclinensis Ananjeva, Orlov & Nguyen, 2017 = Diploderma ngoclinense ( Ananjeva, Orlov & Nguyen, 2017 ) AHR 8(1): 15 Holotype : ZISP 26230 , adult female, above Mang Xang Village , Ngoc Linh Mountain , Dac Glei District , Kon Tum Province , Vietnam ( 15°05’ N 107°57’ E , 1650 m asl ), coll. A. V. Abramov , 25 Mar. 2004 Paratypes : ZISP 26231 , adult female and VNMN 3110, subadult female, same data as the holotype Type locality : above Mang Xang Village, Ngoc Linh Mountain, Dac Glei District, Kon Tum Province , Vietnam ( 15°05’ N 107°57’ E , 1,650 m asl) Remarks : Ananjeva et al (2017) used two different museum acronyms (VNMH and VNMN) for the Vietnamese collection where one of the paratypes has been deposited. Hitherto this collection has not been listed in previous herpetological publications. As the full name of the collection is given as Vietnam National Museum of Nature under author affiliations we consider VNMN as the correct acronym. Wang et al. (2018) treat this species as conspecific with Diploderma splendidum ( Barbour & Dunn, 1919 ) Japalura otai Mahony, 2009 = Cristidorsa otai ( Mahony, 2009 ) Zootaxa 2212: 43 Holotype : ZSI 25217, male, “ Sairep , Lunglet District , Mizoram ”, coll. Type locality : Ishigaki Shima and Iriomote Shima, Ryukyu Islands, Japan Remarks : The original description was first published by van Denburgh in a privately printed paper published also in 1912: “Advance diagnoses of new reptiles and amphibians from the Loo Choo Islands and Formosa ”. Japalura polygonata miyakensis van Denburgh, 1912 = Diploderma polygonatum ishigakiense (van Denburgh, 1912 ) Proc. Cal. Acad. Sci., 4(3): 211 Holotype : CAS 21353, Miyako Shima, Loo Choo Islands , coll. V. Kühne , 23–24 May 1910 Paratypes : CAS 21346–352 , Miyako Shima, Loo Choo Islands . Japan , coll. V. Kühne , 23–24 May 1910 Type locality : Miyako Shima, Ryukyu Islands, Japan Remarks : The original description was first published by van Denburgh in a privately printed paper published also in 1912: “Advance diagnoses of new reptiles and amphibians from the Loo Choo Islands and Formosa ”. In his guide book about Japanese amphibians and reptiles Matsumoto (1979) did not list Japalura polygonata miyakensis . Although Matsumoto (l. c.) did not explicitly synonymize the subspecies he treated poulations from Miyako Shima as identical with Japalura polygonata ishigakiensis . Apart from Ota (1991b , 2003 ) there appears to be no further mention of Matsumoto‘s publication in herpetological literature.
