First recorded from Carteret Harbour, Lambom, New Ireland , as Sphyraena megalolepis , by Peters (1877 : 842); subsequently reported as Sphyraena langsar by Munro (1958 : 148); a video of a specimen taken in Albatross Passage, southwestern Kavieng District, at 3–13 m depth, St. KD83, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell). Distribution and habitat. New Ireland : 2, 3.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa , Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Samoa , north to southern Japan and Korea, south to Lord Howe Island. Found in bays and estuaries, in seagrass beds and rocky reefs, 10–120 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
