Seychelles
and Mascarenes east to Society Islands, north to southern
Japan
, south to Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found in lagoon and seaward coral reefs, adults usually resting during the day under coral heads or in caves, active at night, juveniles in shallow lagoons,
