First recorded from St. Mathias, New Ireland as Mugil vaigiensis by Duncker & Mohr (1926 : 131), based on ZMH 14953; subsequently reported as Chelon vaigiensis from Tigak Islands, Kavieng by Wright & Richards (1985 : 73); record confirmed from Emirau Island by Kailola (1975 : 179). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 . KFRS and ZMB material. Distribution and habitat. New Ireland : 2, 4.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall, Gambier and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan , south to Shark Bay ( Western Australia ), New South Wales ( Australia ), New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0–3 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
