• Cylindrically bodied rodents, with short legs and tails; stiff hairs on feet, faces, and tails; reduced eyes; lack of exter nal ear pinnae, blunt heads, and well-developed incisors with small buccal openings protected by flaps ofskin.
• 10-30 cm.
• Afrotropical Region.
• Subterranean in open forests to savannas and semi-deserts under mesic to xeric conditions.
• 5 genera, 17 species, 24 taxa.
