dolichocephala
Swenk and Cockerell, 1907
Counties: Anoka.
Comments: This species, known from only
four females
and
nine males
collected at one location in eastern Minnesota, represents a large range expansion, with the previous closest records from Nebraska (
Timberlake 1960
). These specimens were found in the same location where the only specimens of the western species
Andrena haynesi
were also found nesting in deep sand (see above). To confirm the identification, the Minnesota specimens were compared to the
holotype
and several other specimens of
P. dolichocephala
deposited at the University of Nebraska State Museum, as well as some specimens of the similar species
P. laticincta
Swenk and Cockerell, 1907
and
P. tridentata
Stevens, 1919
, deposited at the J.B.
Wallis
/R.E. Roughley Museum of Entomology and the University of Nebraska State Museum, respectively. A fifth female was photographed at the same location by J. Gardner on
5 Sep. 2015
and uploaded to BugGuide.net (https://bugguide.net/node/view/1306651).
