One female ( OSAL 0083375) and 2 females ( IRSNB ) from Coccothraustes vespertinus (Cooper) ( Passeriformes : Fringillidae ), USA : Montana, Ravalli Co., Hamilton, 46°N, 109°W (USGS-GNIS), 23 February 1972 , coll. C.E. Yunker; 5 females and 1 male ( OSAL 0 0 82652, 0 0 82653, 0 0 83346, 0 0 83365, 0 0 83368, 0083374) from Loxia curvirostra Linnaeus ( Passeriformes : Fringillidae ), USA : California, Mono Co., Cottonwood Basin, 37.54°N 118.16°W (USGS-GNIS), 20 June 1954 , coll. Russell and Furman. Type deposition . Unknown. Hosts and distribution . This species parasitizes North American representatives of the family Fringillidae ( Ewing 1911 ; Moss 1979 ; present paper; see Table 1 ). Remarks . This species was insufficiently described based on a female from Coccothraustes vespertinus probably from USA ( Ewing 1911 ). Its holotype is lost. Morley & Shillinger (1937) , Chaddock (1941) and Moss (1979) recorded this species from various North American passerines (more than 25 species), but most of these records are misidentifications (see present paper). We provide redescription of this species from the type host and Loxia curvirostra .
