Definition.
The maximum clade consisting of
Terebellum terebellum
Linnaeus, 1758
and all species that share a more recent common ancestor with it than with
Strombus pugilis
Linnaeus, 1758
,
Tibia fusus
(
Linnaeus,1758
)
,
Struthiolaria papulosa
(Martyn, 1784)
or
Aporrhais pespelecani
(
Linnaeus, 1758
)
.
Diagnosis.
The shell is typically long and narrow, with the last whorl extending over much of the earlier whorls. The stromboidal notch is poorly developed or absent.
Composition.
The clade contains two subfamilies,
Pseudoterebellinae
with three genera,
Seraphsinae
with three genera, and the genus
Mauryna
, the content of which is detailed herein. It explicitly excludes the sister taxa contained within
Rostellariidae
and
Strombidae
.
Remarks.
This family was defined as containing two distinct groups: the involute
Seraphs
Montfort, 1810
and relatives, and the evolute
Terebellum
Röding, 1798
and
Paraseraphs
Jung, 1974
(
Jung 1974
)
complexes. The relationships contained within the definition have been supported by a morphological study by Maxwell
et al.
(2019) and with the use of molecular data (
Irwin
et al.
2021
).
