In a small valley, moist, dense shrub, in leaf litter. From near sea level in France up to 2900 m in Spanish Sierra Nevada. Remarks Akkari & Enghoff (2012) synonymised nivalis under ilicis . This species has a remarkably disjunct distribution: the Pyrenees in the north and Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Grazalema in the south.
