Originally described as Lutjanus percula from Port Praslin, New Ireland by Lacepède (1802 : 194, 239–240); reported from New Ireland by Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1830a: 397–398), based on MNHN material, from Port Praslin, New Ireland as Amphiprion tunicatus by Lesson (1831 : 192–194, poissons pl. 25, fig. 3), and from St. Mathias and Kavieng, New Ireland by Duncker & Mohr (1929 : 68). A specimen photographed in Kavieng region on 5 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey ( Teitelbaum et al . 2013 : 9, 14); specimens photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng region by Dietmar Amon; a video of a specimen taken at Anelaua Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–16 m depth, St. KR98, in 2014 (identified by Barry C.
