male. A, left palp prolateral view, arrow indicates microsculpture; B, same, ventral view, arrow indicates microsculpture; C, same, retrolateral view; D, left palpal patella, prolateral view, arrow indicates microsculpture, SEM. Scale bars A, B, C = 0.1 mm; D = 0.05 mm.
Diagnosis.
Male and female can easily be distinguished from all other
Xyphinus
species
by the presence of rather large, sharply pointed, posteriorly directed denticles on the anterior part of the abdomen (
Figs 5A,C,E
;
7A,C,F,G
). The male palp is characterized by strongly sclerotized dark apophyses and the prolateral presence of microsculpture on the patella (
Figs 5G–I
;
6A–D
). The female epigastric region is strongly protruding, appearing as grip in lateral view (
Fig. 7C,F
, arrow).
Description.
Male. Total length
2.02 mm
.
Carapace
: Dark red-brown, broadly oval in dorsal view, domed in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with angular posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, anterolateral corners with slightly sclerotized triangular projections, posterolateral surface with few tiny spikes, surface of pars cephalica and sides smooth, fovea absent, with a pair of conical denticles on the posterior part, lateral margin denticles sharply pointed, anteriorly diminishing in size (
Fig. 5A–C
). Clypeus: Straight in frontal view, sloping forward in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more. With two pairs of long, anteriorly directed setae (
Fig. 5A,D,F
).
Eyes
: PME largest, ALE and PLE circular, PME oval. Posterior eye row recurved from above, procurved from front. ALE and PLE separated by less than ALE radius, PLE and PME separated by less than PME radius, PME touching (
Fig. 5A,D
).
Sternum
: Longer than wide, sickleshaped structures not touching. Radial furrows opposite coxae III absent. Anterior corner unmodified, but margin strongly sclerotized (
Fig. 5B
). With evenly scattered setae. Surface smooth (
Fig. 5B
).
Mouthparts
: Chelicerae slightly divergent, with swelling and microsculpture on anterior face, setae evenly scattered (
Fig. 5D,F
). Labium rectangular, indented at middle, margin more sclerotized than sternum, with 3–5 setae on anterior margin.
Abdomen
: Book-lung covers ovoid. Scuto-pedicel region with W-shaped scutal ridge, few small bumps with elongated setae present dorsally of the scutal ridge (
Fig. 5C,E
). Dorsal scutum dark red-brown, surface smooth, anterior half with sharply pointed, anteriorly directed denticles (
Fig. 5A,C,E
). Epigastric scutum slightly protruding. Postepigastric scutum without posteriorly directed lateral apodemes (
Fig. 5B
). Posterior spiracles connected by groove.
Legs
: Tibia with three, metatarsi with one trichobothria each. Harpoon-like hairs covering the distal part of metatarsi III and IV.
Genitalia
: Sperm pore small, situated in front of anterior spiracles. Trochanter normal size, unmodified. Femur one to two times as long as trochanter, attaching to patella medially; patella about as long as femur, with microsculpture on prolateral surface (
Figs 5F,G
;
6A–D
). Tibia two times as long as patella, with three trichobothria. Cymbium pale orange, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, with two long and thick, almost spine-like, anteriorly directed setae; bulb orange-brown, 1 to 1.5 times as long as cymbium, with one large, dark, plate-like apophysis ventrally and several thin and small apophyses dorsally (
Figs 5G–I
,
6A–C
).

Scale bars A, B, C = 1 mm; D, F, G, H = 0.5 mm; E = 0.1 mm.
Female. Total length
2.12 mm
.
Carapace
: Strongly elevated in lateral view (
Fig. 7C
).
Mouthparts
: Microsculpture on anterior face of chelicerae absent.
Female palp
spineless, femora with two spine-like hairs ventrally, tibia with three trichobothria and few spine-like hairs prolaterally (
Fig. 7E
).
Abdomen
: Epigastric scutum strongly protruding (
Fig. 7C,F
).
Genitalia
: Epigastric furrow narrow. Dark sclerotized, tongue-like, strongly protruding structure visible, elongated posteriorly. Dark straight tube shining through (
Figs 7B,G,H
;
8A–E
).
