Colorado ( U.S.A. ), south in mountains to C. Oaxaca ( Mexico ). COMMENT: Subgenus Microtus ; see Anderson, 1959 , Univ. Kans. Publ. Mus . Nat. Hist., 9:415-511, and Gromov and Polyakov, 1977:319 . Hooper and Hart, 1962 , Misc. Publ. Mus . Zool. Univ. Mich., No. 120, 68 pp., placed this species in genus Microtus , subgenus Pitymys, closely allied with ochrogaster and pinetorum (RSH), but the dental pattern shows no resemblance to Pitymys ( CAR ).
