Five new replacement names in Reduviidae (Heteroptera) Author Swanson, Daniel R. text Zootaxa 2017 2017-10-31 4341 2 291 295 journal article 31689 10.11646/zootaxa.4341.2.12 05e45ff4-b918-44d7-a800-4cdb335b5c3c 1175-5326 1039463 479EA688-B87A-4313-81F8-E829C4BDA940 Reduvius lasius nom. nov. = Reduvius villosus Fabricius, 1794 : 194 . Junior secondary homonym of Reduvius villosus ( Thunberg, 1783 ) . The relevant nomenclatural details for this name are summarized in Table 2 . TABLE 2. Nomenclatural history for Reduvius villosus . Senior homonym: Junior homonym: Reduvius villosus ( Thunberg, 1783 ) Reduvius villosus Fabricius, 1794 1. Linnaeus (1758: 446) described Cimex personatus as a new species from “Europa”. 2. Fabricius (1775: 730) transferred Cimex personatus Linnaeus, 1758 to his new genus Reduvius , thereby creating the combination Reduvius personatus ( Linnaeus, 1758 ) . 3. Thunberg (1783: 35) described Cimex villosus as a new species from an unknown locality, referring his species to Stoll’s (1781: 57, pl. XIII, fig. 90) “ De Bonte Ruygpoot ” from Surinam . Note: In Stoll's work, “ De Bonte Ruig-poot ” was actually depicted in fig. 91, although, based on the all black coloration, Thunberg clearly intended the bug depicted in fig. 90, “ De Zwarte Ruigpoot ”. 1. Fabricius (1794: 194) described Reduvius villosus as a new species from “Barbaria” (=Barbary Coast: present-day North Africa). 4. Stål (1855: 345) synonymized Cimex villosus Thunberg, 1783 with Reduvius personatus ( Linnaeus, 1758 ) . 2. Stål (1868: 124) transferred Reduvius villosus Fabricius, 1794 to the genus Opsicoetus Klug, 1830 , thereby creating the combination Opsicoetus villosus ( Fabricius, 1794 ) . However, Burmeister (1835: 234) had synonymized the genus Opsicoetus with Reduvius , and this synonymy has been followed by nearly all subsequent authors. 5. Puton (1875: 96) transferred Cimex villosus Thunberg, 1783 to the genus Reduvius Fabricius, 1775 , resulting in the combination Reduvius villosus ( Thunberg, 1783 ) . Fabricius’ (1794) name is a junior secondary homonym ( ICZN 1999, Art. 57.3 ), and it is here rejected. No junior synonyms exist for this taxon ( Putshkov & Putshkov 1987 , 1996 ; Maldonado 1990 ), and a new substitute name is required under Art. 60 ( ICZN 1999 ). Therefore, I propose Reduvius lasius nom. nov. for Reduvius villosus Fabricius, 1794 . The new epithet is derived from the Greek adjective λάσῐος, -α, -ον, Latinized lasius , - a , - um , ‘shaggy, woolly’ and reflects the hairiness highlighted in the original epithet.
