Arranged as a subspecies of

Mares et al., 1989

;
Moojen, 1952
;
Olds, 1988
). Karyotypic identity (2n = 66, FN = 66) clarified by Bonvicino and Almeida (2000), who expanded upon its morphological and ecological separation from
C. expulsus
.
Anderson (1997)
considered identification of the Bolivian specimens as tentative and advised further review of series presently allocated to
C. callosus
.
