Introduced as replacement name for the senior (!) homonym Melanopsis fuchsi Handmann, 1882, non Brusina, 1884. Wenz (1929 : 2813-2814) synonymized Melanopsis handmanni as well as Melanopsis fuchsi Handmann, 1882 with Melanopsis pygmaea .
