(2009) suggested that the genus Macroramphosus is represented by a single species in the northeastern Atlantic, M. scolopax , with different morphotypes interbreeding off the central and southwestern Portuguese coast. Dyer & Westneat (2010) indicated the distribution of the species M. gracilis as being the western Central Atlantic and this species seems to be sympatric with M. scolopax , all around the world.
