Borostomias can be distinguished in the Astronesthinae by the presence of 8 or more short and widely spaced maxillary teeth; gill teeth in groups of 2–4; ceratohyal teeth absent; dorsal-fin origin close to pelvic-fin origin; photophore series in continuous rows (Gibbs, 1964). Six valid species (Fricke et al ., 2022).
