Cylindera
terricola continua (Knaus, 1923)
Cicindela pusilla imperfecta
form
continua
Knaus, 1923: 195. Type locality: "Baldwin Lake near Pine Knot (8,500 feet), San Bernardino Mountains [San Bernardino County], California" (original citation). Holotype probably in KSUC. Note. This taxon was clearly proposed as an infrasubspecific entity by Knaus (1923: 195) but since it was adopted as the valid name of a subspecies before 1985 (e.g., Boyd 1982: 16), it is deemed to be subspecific from its original publication (ICZN 1999: Article 45.6.4.1). The subspecies is credited to Pearson, Knisley and Kazilek (2006: 153) by some authors (e.g., Kippenhan 2007: 7; Erwin and Pearson 2008: 222) but since these authors failed to indicate explicitly that the taxon was intentionally new, a mandatory requirement (ICZN 1999: Article 16.1), the name could not be credited to them even if
Knaus'
name was unavailable.
Distribution.
This subspecies, the "Interior Tiger Beetle", is known from Nye County in western Nevada and from the Traverse Mountain Range in western Ventura County eastwards to the San Bernardino Mountains in San Bernardino County and the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada in Kern County, California (Kippenhan 2007: 14, Fig. 8). The record from
"NE"
(Erwin and Pearson 2008: 222) is probably an error for
"NV."

Note.
Freitag (1999: 87) listed this taxon as a junior synonym of
Cylindera terricola imperfecta
(LeConte) but Pearson et al. (2006: 153) and Kippenhan (2007: 7) retained it as a valid subspecies.
