Species in the C. vulpinum species complex can be distinguished by the short lateral microtomentose strips on the frons that do not extend to the proclinate seta. The complex includes two described species ( C. vulpinum Hendel and C . fumipenne Hendel ) and at least seven new species. Comments. Many species in this complex appear indistinguishable without dissection. Several morphospecies closely resemble C. vulpinum , but without dissecting a C. vulpinum type specimen none could be identified as that species. No specimens of C . fumipenne were available for dissection, so it could not be included in the phylogenetic analysis although it does possess the shortened microtomentose frontal markings that define the complex. Species in the C . vulpinum species complex range from southern Mexico to northeastern Bolivia . This species complex is under study though a revision is in a preliminary stage.
