Hypseleotris compressa
(Krefft)
Empire Gudgeon
In contrast to many other regions of northern
Australia
, within the range of the species,
Hypseleotris compressa
is uncommon within Kimberley rivers. It has only been recorded from the Prince Regent River (below King Cascade), from near the mouth of the Lawley and King Edward/Carson Rivers and from the lower Ord River (
Fig. 41
). Thus, the species does not penetrate into fresh waters of any of the Kimberley reaches far beyond the tidal limit, a situation similar to that in the Pilbara portion of its range (Morgan & Gill 2004).
