Taxon discussion
Potamogeton distinctus
shows a wide range of phenotypic plasticity, especially in leaf morphology. It seems to be that the two-carpellate flower, the diagnostic character of the species, is essential for precise morphological identification in the field; identification with vegetative morphology alone is to be avoided (see Discussion).
