Adiantum caudatum
Linnaeus
,
Mantissa Plantarum Altera
:
308. 1771
.
"Habitat in
India
orientali." RCN: 7928.
Type not designated.
Original material:
Herb. Linn. No. 1252.6 (
LINN
)
; [icon] in Burman, Thes. Zeylan.: 8, t. 5, f. 1. 1737.
Current name:
Adiantum caudatum
L.
(
Pteridaceae
).
Note:
Pichi Sermolli (in
Webbia
12: 674. 1957) noted that 1252.6 (LINN) is from China and argued that it should be excluded from consideration as a type because of conflict with
Linnaeus'
"Hab. in
India
orientali". He added that the cited Burman plate, which "very accurately represents
A. caudatum
in the form which is common in Ceylon" might be the type if
Burman's
own material in G proved to have been lost.
