Two female syntypes of obesus Hutton were examined and are specimens of grandicornis Macquart. There has been much confusion about " Syrphus viridiceps " of various authors, but not Macquart. Syrphus viridiceps Macquart is a species of Austrosyrphus that is endemic to Australia . The species called " viridiceps " by many authors is grandicornis Macquart.
