On the types species of the New World dung beetle genus Canthidium Erichson, 1847 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae), with an annotated checklist of species Author Cupello, Mario text Zootaxa 2018 2018-03-06 4388 4 451 486 journal article 30595 10.11646/zootaxa.4388.4.1 a884362d-a9f8-4cee-8cd4-dcf59a73ede2 1175-5326 1189072 7A57C29B-6B16-445E-A8D7-750C736E6B42 Canthidium ( Canthidium ) moestrum Harold, 1867 Canthidium moestrum Harold, 1867a : 37 [here transferred to the subgenus Canthidium ]. Type locality: Brazil (“ Brasilien oder Columbien”; see discussion below). Type material: Unknown number of male syntypes (probably at least some of them in MNHN—ex Frédéric Tarnier collection, via Jules Desbrochers des Loges collection). Distribution: Brazil , Argentina , and Uruguay ( Harold 1867b , Martínez & Halffter 1986a) [although Harold (1867a) had originally said that he did not know whether his specimens were collected in Brazil or Colombia and, later ( Harold 1867b ), stated that he had examined new specimens collected in southern Brazil and Uruguay , Harold (1869a) and Gillet (1911) cite only Brazil in the distribution range of C. moestrum . Bruch (1911) and Martínez (1959) tentatively cited the occurrence in Argentina , information that was replicated without questioning by Blackwelder (1944) and later confirmed by Martínez & Halffter (1986a) and Martínez (1989). Vazde-Mello (2000) confirmed the occurrence in Brazil . It seems clear, therefore, that this species is limited to a region within southeastern South America and is not present in Colombia as cited as a possibility in Harold (1867a) ].
