This is the only known west Atlantic species of the genus which has been reported from nine countries, both in tropical and subtropical regions ( Rocha et al. 2005 , 2012 ). The species is very rare in the southern Gulf of Mexico (Table 1); it has been found in shallow waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico in Florida ( Van Name 1945 ). Global distribution.
