Distribution: WC Idaho ( USA ), in three isolated areas; north of Payette River to Hitt and Cuddy Mtns; between Cuddy and Seven Devils Mtns, and east of West Mtns. Conservation: "...limited ranges and small breeding populations...vulnerable..." ( Yensen, 1991:597 ). U.S. ESA – Candidate taxon as S. b. endemicus, Threatened as S. b. brunneus ; IUCN - Critically Endangered as S. b. brunneus, Vulnerable as S. b. endemicus ; otherwise Endangered as S. brunneus . Discussion: Subgenus Spermophilus ( Hall, 1981:385 ) . Includes endemicus , which "may be reaching species-level separation" ( Yensen, 1991:597 ).
