( Figs. 1–2 ) Denopelopia irioquereus (Sasa et Suzuki, 2000: 24, Fig. 26 a–h) (as Yaequintus ). [ Holotype 385: 039.] Denopelopia bractea Cheng et Wang, 2005a : 56 –58, Figs. 1–5 . Syn. nov. In the key to the adult males of Tanypodinae by Murray and Fittkau (1989) , Yaequintus irioquereus Sasa et Suzuki will key to Denopelopia Roback et Rutter in having the following characters: costa not produced beyond R4+5, ending almost mid way between M1+2 and M3+4; R2 absent; main teeth of inner spur of mid and hind legs elongate; single row of setae on tergite IX present; and phallapodeme indistinct. The genus Denopelopia was established by Roback and Rutter (1988) based on a species from the Nearctic Region. Recently, Cheng and Wang (2005a) described three species of Denopelopia from Palaearctic China . Yaequintus irioquereus apparently is a senior synonym of D . bractea Cheng et Wang , as it possesses two distinctive scale-like setae ( Fig. 2 ) subapically on foretibia, and has a brown abdomen. Sasa and Suzuki (2000) did not mention these scale-like setae on the fore tibia. They also stated that the squama was bare. However, in the holotype one setae is present and some additional sockets can bee seen along the edge of the squama. Adults of Tanypodinae without setae on squama are not known ( Murray & Fittkau 1989 ). This is the first record of Denopelopia from Japan .
