Holotype male Brazil , Santa Catarina , Nova Teutônia ( 27 3 0 ′′ S , 52 23 60 ′′ W )/ XI.1948 / F. Plaumann leg. (Deposited in MZUSP ). Figure 4. Cnodalomyia catarinensis : (A) Mesonotum; (B) gonostylus (lateral view). Diagnosis Cnodalomyia catarinensis can be easily distinguished from C . obtusa and C . papaveroi sp. nov. by the entirely yellow mystax. The distiphallus is as long as the gonostylus in C . catarinensis , while it is one-third longer in C . obtusa and one-third shorter in C . papaveroi sp. nov. From C . artigasi sp. nov. it can be distinguished by the lateral stripes of the mesonotum, which are divided into three portions of the same length in C . catarinensis , whereas in C . artigasi sp. nov. the posterior portion has half the length of both anterior portions. Body length. 10.7–19.3 mm. Wing length: 9.1–13.4 mm. Remarks A complete description of C . catarinensis was presented in Lamas and Mellinger (2008) , except for the egg, which is herein described. Eggs. Enlarged, light brown; aeropyles largely present in the exochorion, button-like ( Figure 5A ); chorion composed of pentagonal cells; micropylar area folded in the Figure 5. Cnodalomyia catarinensis : (A) Egg (200 ×); (B) micropylar area (600 ×). apical part of exochorion ( Figure 5B ), largely smooth, without grooves, with one central micropyle.
