It is included in the synonymy of Lonchura castaneothorax assimilis in Mayr et al. (1968: 384–385) , and all Australian populations are included in the nominate subspecies by Schodde and Mason (1999: 771–772) . No specimen from the Fitzroy River came to AMNH with the Rothschild Collection.
