Subgenus
Tarulus Bedel, 1906
Tarulus
Bedel, 1906: 253. Type species:
Tarus zargoides
Wollaston, 1863 by monotypy. Etymology. From the generic name
Tarus
[
q.v
.] and the Latin suffix -
ulus
(small, little) [masculine].
Diversity.
Twenty-one species in North America (16 species, one of them Holarctic), Mexico (two species shared with North America), Eurasia (two species, one endemic to eastern Asia), and North Africa (four endemic species).
Identification.
Lindroth (1969a) reviewed all North American species. Since then, one Palaearctic species (
Coptodera vaporariorum
) has been found to occur naturally also in North America. Shpeley and Ball (1999: 420-421) published an emendation to
Lindroth's
(1969a: 1072-1073) key of
Cymindis
to incorporate
Coptodera vaporariorum
and commented on the structural differences to separate that species from
Coptodera unicolor
which is most similar externally.
Taxonomic Note.
Lorenz (2005) listed all Nearctic species in the subgenus
Cymindis
s.str. However, Lindroth (1969a: 1070) noted that the North American species belong to the subgenus
Tarulus
, to which
Coptodera vaporariorum
is included.
