Resolving taxonomic issues of cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) including new combinations, new synonymies, and revised status, with updates on the diversity of the Brazilian cicada fauna and new records for four South American countries Author Sanborn, Allen F. text Zootaxa 2023 2023-07-20 5318 3 339 362 http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.5318.3.2 journal article 57485 10.11646/zootaxa.5318.3.2 39e59e73-ea57-4c57-965f-06bd576d5739 1175-5326 8166896 D7216A8E-B6C2-4A34-9EC6-CACC3D9951E3 Parnisa proponens ( Walker, 1858c ) Cicada proponens Walker, 1858c: 312 (Petropolis, Rio Janiero). Cicada proponens var. b Walker, 1858c: 312 (Rio Janiero). n. syn. REMARKS. Walker’s variety is also not available and cannot be classified as a subspecies under Articles 11.9.1 and 45.6.4 (ICZN 1999). Walker (1858c) described the variety at the end of the paragraph describing the new species. The Latin version of the species description begins with “[g]reen or yellow”. The variety is distinguished in the English paragraph by being luteus with black marks and luteus basal venation in the fore wings. Green generally fades to yellow in cicadas after death. The amount of time varies but the lack of any structural differences and the fact that both specimens were collected in “Rio Janiero” suggests the observed color differences are simply due to fading of the original green in what Walker (1858c) called a variety. Therefore, Cicada proponens var. b Walker, 1858c n . syn. is synonymized to Parnisa proponens ( Walker, 1858c ) rather than providing a nomen novum for the taxon. DISTRIBUTION. The species is endemic to Brazil ( Metcalf 1963c ).
