Genus
Glyphohesione
Friedrich, 1950
Type
species.
Glyphohesione klatti
Friedrich, 1950
, by monotypy.
Remarks.
Glyphohesione
was described by
Friedrich (1950)
as a monospecific genus, with
type
species
G. klatti
classified as
Hesionidae
.
Eliason (1962)
redescribed
G
.
klatti
, as belonging to the genus
Ancistrosyllis
, placing it in
Pilargidae
.
Glyphohesione
has also been considered a junior synonym of
Synelmis
by
Pettibone (1966)
but it was re-established as a valid genus by
Fitzhugh & Wolf (1990)
. Later, a revision of
Glyphohesione
placed the genus back in
Hesionidae
and suggested both families form a monophyletic group (Licher 1994). Those different hypotheses, both based on morphology, might be explained because of the phylogenetic rooting strategy; while
Fitzhugh & Wolf (1990)
used
Syllidae,
Licher & Westheide (1994)
selected
Hesionidae (
Pleijel 2001
)
. Most recent taxonomic studies include
Glyphohesione
in
Pilargidae
. There was no previous record of
Glyphohesione
species for
Brazil
.
