Remarks
.
Pooreotanais gari
was described from a male and a number of females and subadults collected from Western Port,
Victoria
, at depths between 13 and
18 m
on a variety of substrata. The genus, and indeed the family
Mirandotanaidae
, is characterized by having a grossly inflated posterior half (or more) of the body, including the pleon and at least pereonite 6 (pereonites
4 to 6 in
the present species). The function of this inflated posterior is unknown, but is unlikely to be related to reproduction as it is also shown by the male.
The only other species of
Pooreotanais
,
P. ningaloo
, is from
Western Australia
, and is distinct in having only pereonite 6 inflated, and the pleotelson longer than any pleonites (shorter in
P. gari
),
