Taxonomic comments . This species, previously included in the genus Python Daudin, 1803 , is currently divided into three subspecies, of which the nominative occurs in Sumatra ( Auliya et al. , 2002 ). Distribution on Sumatra . Provinces of Aceh, Sumatera Utara, Sumatera Barat, Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu, Sumatera Selatan, and Lampung ( David & Vogel, 1996 ). Also the islands of Pulau We, Bangka, Belitung, Enggano, Nias, Simeulue and Mentawai Archipelago and Riau Archipelago ( David & Vogel, 1996 ). Biology . This juvenile specimen was found at dawn by a villager near a house on the edge of a forest (November). Several specimens were seen in captivity in Maninjau, Bayur, and Lubuksao. Although the species seems to be still rather common in the region of Lake Maninjau, it is by all evidence much hunted. Several times, we saw captive specimens in cases or cages. Furthermore, the largest specimen was not longer than 3.5 m , while others were only 2 m long. Larger adults may probably have become rare.
