Material examined. Brazil , São Paulo : 7 ♂ , CCDB 5491 , Ubatuba , Píer do Itaguá , colls. N. Rossi et al. , 30.xi.2014 . Distribution. Western Atlantic— Bermuda , USA (Florida), Caribbean Sea, Colombia , Venezuela , Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Rio Grande do Norte , Paraíba , Pernambuco , Alagoas , Sergipe , Bahia , Espírito Santo , Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo , Paraná , Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul ), Uruguay ( Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987 ; Rieger 1998 ; Melo 1999 ; Coelho-Filho 2006 ; Coelho et al. 2007 ; Nucci & Melo 2007 ; Olguín & Mantelatto 2013 ). Remarks. Eventhough Pagurus provenzanoi has a wide distribution, it is rare in São Paulo. The occurrence in Uruguay is uncertain ( Scarabino 2006 ; Spivak et al. 2019 ). A preliminary molecular phylogeny revealed a close relationship among the South American species of the “ provenzanoi ” clade, including P. provenzanoi and P. brevidactylus ( Olguín & Mantelatto 2013 ) . Despite the absence of specimens collected in São Paulo, we were able to sample tissue of a specimen from Santa Catarina deposited at the MZUSP and obtain a sequence of 16S, which may be useful in future comparisons. Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): MZUSP 13808—16S ( FJ869154 ) ( Mantelatto et al. 2009 ).
