Eupholus
Boidsuval, 1835
Type species
:
Geonemus geoffroyi
Guérin-Méneville, 1831
, subsequent designation by
Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal (1999)
The genus contains species of large body size (ca.
17–31 mm
) and dense scaling, usually of intense green or blue color. Currently, the main diagnostic characters for the genus are the densely squamose antenna with a relatively short scape (
Heller, 1923
; Riedel 2009). Based on the structure of the male transfer apparatus (TA) it can be subdivided into the
E. schoenherrii
-group and the
E. loriae
-group (
Riedel, 2002
); the former characterized by its spine-like TA, the latter with a TA compact and lyriform.
The new species belongs to the
E. loriae
-group and is distinguished from all other species of this group by the presence of black longitudinal bands on the elytra that it shares only with
E. cuvierii
Guérin-Méneville.
